Week 40, Part 2. Markets And Birds Of Prey

Late at night (well, after 10pm, but in Ecuador it feels late) we arrived to Otavalo famous for its Saturday market. That's about it. But there are a few walks around, lagunas, park with big birds, so we had things to do until Saturday, when we planned to shop and send more llama sweaters back home. Так что родители ждите посылку. Из моего там телефон и рюкзак, набитый ламами. Остальное надо передать родителям Лизы.

First day we spent doing nothing! (Noooooothiiiiing), on Friday we hiked up the hill to the Park of Condor where saved birds live, mostly various hawks, but also eagles, owls, and even 2 huge condors. As part of the visit, the Dutch owner demonstrates some of the birds and let them fly around. They always come back. Why wouldn't they if they are well fed and looked after, although they have to live in cages?

Guess, who

Later we decended to a village where there are a few workshops of textile and musical instruments. Unfortunately, traditional afternoon rain started, so we did not get a chance to go to the textile workshop.
Saturday is a market day in Otavalo. It includes animal market in the morning, food market and artesanal market, where all llamas sweaters and ponchos, and hats, and gloves are sold to the tourists. Prices? Well negotiable. Very much so. Final price depends on gringo negotiation skills and can be almost twice less then initial price. After naming the price, venders always ask what yours is. It was fun to walk around and play this game.

Interesting thing about Otavalo is that local men have long hair usually in braid. That makes them look almost handsome (for me without braid, in traditional andean outfit they look similar to the rest of the country, but Liza thinks otherwise).
